Own Your Emotions, Just Like a Child

Have you ever paid attention to children? How they can easily switch from one emotion to another, innocently committed to whatever emotion they are feeling at that moment. They are not afraid to allow their true opinions or feelings to show; they aren’t concerned with how their actions are affecting others, but rather how they are being affected by their environment. As adults, we have been taught to conceal many of our true feelings and emotions, only allowing them to show at a designated time or place, if even then.

As I embark on my career in voice overs, I am learning that in order to deliver a script authentically, you have to be in touch with your true emotions. You have to peel back all the layers, that we use to mask ourselves, and reconnect with who we truly are. By doing so, you give yourself permission to own your emotions, just like a child, and establish your own opinion. In order to accomplish this, you have to be willing to face yourself; willing to analyze how you react in day to day interactions, as well as your true thoughts. The more in tune you become with yourself, the easier it will be to bring a script to life; because you will have more of an insight of who the character is, his or hers motivation, and what he or she stands for.
